Andal

'To the Lord of Malirumsolai surrounded by fragrant groves, I give my word to offer a hundred pots of buffer today, and a hundred pots of sweet morsel filled to the brim. Will the Lord of growing affluence deign to accept them?'

As Andal desires to offer a hundred vessels of butter and a hundred more vessels of Kshirannam (Akkaravadisil) to Lord Sundararaja of Thirumalirumcholai. Suddenly, Ramanuja got worried whether Andal did indeed fulfil her prarthana. He therefore decided to fulfill her wish and offered the Naivedhyam of Butter and Kshirannam in hundred vessels each.

Thereafter, Ramanuja continued on his journey to Srivilliputthur. As he entered the ardha Mantapam of Andal's temple, he was surprised to see Andal waiting for him in person to thank him for the services he rendered on Her behalf at Thirumalirumcholai. She moved out of the Inner sanctum (Garbha Graham) and waited for him at the ardha Mantapam to greet Her "elder brother" for carrying out Her wish across the span of centuries just as a responsible elder brother would fulfill the dear wishes of his younger sister.

She broke Her archa silence and called Ramanuja as Her annan (elder brother). She never went back into the sanctum and stays even today at the Ardha Mantapam with Her consort. Ramanuja is therefore saluted in his ashtottaram as " Godhagrajo digvijetha Godhabhishta prapuraka: ".

Surrender

Kuresh, the famous, intimate disciple of Srila Ramanujacharya once asked his guru the meaning of the well-known Bhagavad-gita verse 18.66:

sarva-dharman parityajya mam ekam saranam vraja
aham tvam sarva-papebhyo moksayisyami ma sucah

“Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto me. I will deliver you from all sinful reactions. Do not fear.”

Ramanuja replied to him, “A person who gives up all independent desires and serves his guru absolutely for an entire year can fully understand the meaning of this verse, and no one else.”

“But life is so uncertain,” said Kuresh, “How can I know whether or not I will live for another year? Please bestow your mercy upon me by making the meaning of the verse manifest in my heart even now.”

Ramanuja considered his request for a while and then replied, “If you live for one month by begging alms from door to door, without knowing where your next meal will come from, then you will begin to realize the meaning of full surrender. At that time, I will instruct you in all the meanings of this glorious verse.”

For one month Kuresh lived as his guru had instructed. When the month had passed, he gained realized knowledge from Ramanuja about the nature of surrender to Krishna.
